Chapitre 1 : L'enfance et la jeunesse de Bertrand de l'Isle

Bertrand était fils d'Aton, seigneur de L'Isle en Gascogne, et de Gervaise, donc petit-fils du comte de Toulouse, Guillaume Taillefer. Issu de la noblesse, Bertrand fut élevé avec tous les jeunes nobles de son temps, dans le cliquetis des armes, et adoubé chevalier. Jeune chevalier, il voyage avec quelques hommes sous ses ordres. Fervent croyant, il fait souvent escale dans des monastères et des abbayes. Au cours de chacune d'elles, il prit et lit. Il découvre ainsi des textes méconnus ou oubliés parmi lesquels les écrits du prophète Aristote, ceux de Saint-Grégoire de Naziance et de Saint-Orgène ou encore le fameux prêche de Nedjaef qu'il serait le premier à enseigner plus tard. Cette jeunesse faite d'érudition et de voyage transforme l'homme qui ne porte plus d'arme et devient diacre puis aumonier de l'ost comtal. Sa vocation nait à cette période dont il dira plus tard : « Les voyages obligent l'homme à s'ouvrir au monde et ainsi la Création divine façonne l'homme. Il est vivement souhaitable que les jeunes gens partent sur les routes avec de vertueuses intentions, c'est la meilleure éducation qu'ils puissent recevoir. »

Chapitre 2 : Un évêque attentif aux besoins de ses fidèles qui participe à la vie de la cité

De retour à Toulouse, un avenir prestigieux lui est promis au sein de la noblesse mais c'est un autre choix que fit le jeune Bertrand de L'Isle en demandant à l'évêque de Toulouse, Izarn , son admission dans le chapitre de la cathédrale. Il choisit ainsi de répandre la Foy plutôt que le Sang. Il prêche et lit encore et toujours. Proche des gens et de leurs préoccupations, il est aimé de beaucoup. La réputation du jeune chanoine dépasse rapidement les limites du pays toulousain et à la mort de leur évêque, Auger en 1083, le clergé et le peuple commingeois vinrent lui proposer l'épiscopat. Voyant là un signe divin, il accepte et rejoint le pays de Comminges. Ainsi le nouveau berger des fidèles commingeois ne se désintéresse pas des problèmes quotidiens de son troupeau, surtout à l'époque où les mauvaises récoltes, les sécheresses, les épidémies et les famines sont monnaie courante. Il est préoccupé de la nourriture de ses ouailles et attentif à leur bien-être matériel. Ainsi, il bénit les pièges d'un chasseur, il remplit les filets d'un pêcheur de la Neste, dans une autre vallée, il rend productif un noyer stérile. Puis traversant un champ cultivé, il libère les paysannes de leur pénible tâche en désherbant définitivement la récolte, enfin, entré dans une auberge, il remplit de vin le tonneau de l'hôtelier.
Il participera donc à redonner vie à la ville antique et en relever les ruines, à attirer une population jeune et dynamique, à favoriser les échanges et la circulation des monnaies, rendre la justice. Toute la ville s'identifie à l'évêque au point de prendre son nom, comme l'épouse adopte le nom de son mari. Toute au long de sa vie, Bertrand n'a cessé de prêcher que l'homme sage doit participer à la vie de la cité, révélant à qui voulait l'entendre le Songe d'Aristote sur la Cité Idéale.

Chapitre 3 : Bertrand, l'évêque des voyageurs

Le diocèse de Comminges était étendu et traversé de nombreuses vallées. Bertrand qui était un homme robuste le parcourait inlassablement, voyageant de village en village, de vallée en vallée. Il n'aimait pas voyager seul. Aussi appréciait-il de se joindre à des groupes de voyageurs rencontrés à l'occasion d'une visite dans une taverne ou sur le marché. Il appliquait à la lettre les recommandations que St Grégoire de Naziance fait à Athénaïs et les enseignait à ses compagnons de route.
Lors de ses voyages, il partageait toujours le repas avec ses compagnons du moment. Il faisait toujours la même prière avant de manger :

Chapitre 4 : Bertrand, l'évêque des brigands

Aimé, respecté et populaire, l'évêque de Comminges était souvent consulté en cas de litige. De nombreux brigands furent donc soumis à son jugement. Le premier d'entre eux fut Jodel, il avait détroussé de riches personnes sur la route de Tarbes. Le malfaiteur fut donc mené devant l'évêque. Celui-ci aurait pris la parole ainsi :
Vous venez m'enquérir pour porter le jugement de cet homme. Comment te nommes-tu ?
-Jodel !
-Pourquoi es-tu là ?
-Parce que j'ai volé cet homme.
-Pourquoi as-tu commis ce geste ?
-Je n'ai pas de quoi me nourrir, la vie est chère et cet homme a tant d'argent qu'il ne sait plus quoi en fait.
-Je comprends mais cette attitude ne t'apportera rien de bon, tout au mieux un peu d'argent mais aussi beaucoup d'ennuis.
Rends à cet homme ce que tu lui as pris, prie et viens me voir tous les jours, je ferai mon possible pour te trouver du travail."
Chaque jour l'homme vint voir l'évêque. Il pria avec lui et travailla à l'église. Il remboursa l'argent qu'il devait à l'homme volé mais continua à venir la rencontre de l'évêque de chaque jour. Après une année, l'évêque l'invita à manger et au cours du repas, les deux hommes eurent cette conversation :
Comment te sens-tu Jodel ?
-Bien, très bien. Grâce à vous Monseigneur.
-Grâce à toi. Toi seul est responsable de ton changement avec l'aide du Très-Haut.
-Oui mais votre présence près de moi est essentielle pour moi.
-Cette présence, c'est ce que l'on appelle l'amitié. L’Amitié est la plus grande des richesses si elle est sincère et véritable. Il faut la vivre pleinement au point d'en faire son point faible comme le disait le très saint Grégoire.
Le repas se poursuivit et alors que les hommes allaient se séparer, Bertrand dit à son ami :
Jodel, va. Prends la route, tes fautes sont pardonnées. Ne brigande plus. Reviens me voir si tu le souhaites et n'oublie jamais ce que tu as vécu ici.
-Monseigneur, je ne briganderai plus. Je vous remercie pour votre pardon. Je veux mieux connaître les écrits saints à vos côtés.
-Ce n'est pas moi qui te pardonne, c'est le Très-Haut. Il pardonne à ceux qui renoncent aux vices pour chercher la vertu. Tu veux étudier les écritures. C'est tout à ton honneur. Alors va, prends la route de St Liziers, rejoins Muret et enfin Toulouse. Rends-toi au séminaire de ma part et étudie. Travaille aussi. Partage avec tous ceux que tu croiseras et donne quelque chose aux pauvres que tu croiseras. Si tu n'as rien de matériel que tu puisses donner, alors donne ton plus beau regard, ta plus douce parole.

Sur ces mots, Jodel prit la route. On dit que de nombreux brigands vinrent ensuite en Comminges, à la rencontre de l'évêque Bertrand et du pardon. A tel point que la ville fut surnommée la ville des brigands. Quant à Jodel, il étudia et devint un fin connaisseur des écritures, enseignant à son tour au séminaire de Toulouse.

Chapitre 5 : Fin de la vie terrestre et patronage

L'évêque de Comminges mena ainsi une vie pieuse, tournée vers les autres et l'amitié. Âgé, ses forces l'abandonnaient davantage chaque jour. Il passait de plus en plus de temps dans sa cathédrale à prier. Il ne dormait plus, passant ses nuits à prier le Très-Haut.
Un beau matin de dimanche, le sonneur de cloches entra dans la cathédrale et découvrit l'évêque agenouillé dans le chœur, son cœur ne battait plus mais son visage rayonné, souriant, détendu. Il ne faisait pas de doute : Bertran, évêque de Comminges avait rejoint le Paradis solaire.

Plus tard, Saint Bertrand de Comminges devint le saint patron de la ville dont il fut évêque. Il est aussi l'un des saints patrons du comté d'Armagnac et Comminges et le saint patron du Comminges. Enfin, de part son étude de la vie de Saint-Grégoire de Naziance, il est un des saints mineurs de l'ordre grégorien qui le considère comme le premier grégorien de l'histoire.

-Le bâton de marche que le Saint avait sculpté lui-même avec la devise de Saint-Grégoire de Naziance "Chacun a son point faible ; moi c'est l'amitié." est conservé dans la crypte du monastère grégorien d'Argentat.

Hagiography of Bertrand de l'Isle

Chapter 1: Childhood and Youth of Bertrand de l'Isle

Bertrand was the son of Aton, Lord of the Isle in Gascony, and Gervaise, and was therefore the grand-son of the Count of Toulouse, Guillaume Taillefer.  Thus being born into nobility, Bertrand was raised with all the young nobles of his time, learnt the way of arms and was knighted.  As a young knight, he travelled with a few men under his command.  He was a fervent believer, and he often would stopover in monasteries and abbeys. In each of these, he would try to read and learn.  He would therefore often view texts long forgotten or unsung including the writings of the prophet Aristotle, those of St Gregory of Naziance,  and St. Origène or the famous sermon of Nedjaef which he would be the first to teach later. This youth spent studying and travelling transformed the man and he would no longer bear arms but become a deacon and later chaplain of Comtal.  His vocation had been born in this period and he later said: "Travel compel man to embrace the world as God's creation and which man shapes. It is highly desirable that young people go on the road with virtuous intentions, it is the best education they can receive. "

Chapter 2: A bishop attentive to the needs of the faithful by participating in the life of the city

Back in Toulouse, a prestigious future is promised within the nobility but it is another choice that made the young Bertrand de l'Isle ask the Bishop of Toulouse, Isarn, for admission to the cathedral chapter. He thus chose to spread the faith rather than blood. He continues to preach and reads more and more. He became close to the people and their concerns, and is loved by many. The reputation of the young Canon quickly spreads beyond the borders of the toulousain country and with the death of their Bishop, Auger in 1083, the clergy and the people of Comminges came to propose him for the episcopate. Seeing this as a divine sign, he accepted and joined the country of Comminges. Thus the new shepherd of the commingeois faithful attends to the daily problems of his flock, especially at the time of bad harvests, drought, epidemics and famines are commonplace. He is concerned about the food of his flock and attentive to their material well-being. Thus he blessed the pitfalls of a Hunter, a fisherman from Neste he fills his nets, he makes productive a sterile walnut. And then crossing a farmer's field he frees the farmers in their difficult task of weeding the harvest, and finally, entering and Inn he fills with wine the the barrels of the hotelier.
He therefore participated in breathing new life into the ancient city and rebuilding the ruins, to attract a population young and dynamic, to promote exchanges and the movement of currencies, and make justice. The whole town identifies itself with the Bishop, and takes his name, much like a wife adopts her husbands name.  All through his life Bertrand continued to preach that the wise man must participate in the life of a city, and he revealed to all who would listen the Dream Aristotle had of the ideal city.


Chapter 3: Bertrand, Bishop of travelers

The diocese of Comminges was large and crossed many valleys. Bertrand was a robust man and travelled tirelessly, travelling from town to town, from valley to valley. But He did not like travelling alone. He liked to join touring groups that he would meet during a visit to a tavern or at the market. He applied to the letter the recommendations that St Gregory Nazianzen had written to Athénaïs and taught his companions this same principles
During his travels, he always shared meals with his companions at the time. And he would always say the same prayer before eating:

Chapter 4: Bertrand, Bishop of robbers

Loved, respected and popular, the Bishop of Comminges was often consulted in cases of dispute. Many robbers were therefore subject to judgment. The first of them was Jodel, he had robbed rich people on the road to Tarbes. The thief was then brought before the bishop. He reportedly spoke thus:

You have asked me to bring judgement on this mand.  What is your name?
Jodel!
-Why are you here?
Because I stole from this man.
-Why did you commit this act?
I do not have enough to feed me, life is expensive and this man has so much money that he does not know what to do with it all
-I understand, but this attitude will bring nothing good to you, at best a little money, but it will bring a lot of trouble.
Give this man back what you took from him, pray and come to see me every day, I will do my best to find you a job. "
Every day the man came to the bishop. He prayed and worked with him at the church. He paid the money he owed to the man he stole it from but continued to come meet the bishop each day. After a year, the bishop invited him to eat and during the meal, the two men had this conversation:
How do you feel Jodel?
Good, very good. Thanks to you my lord.
-Thanks to you. You alone are responsible for your change with the help of the Most High.
Yes, but your presence near me is essential for me.
-This presence is what we call friendship. Friendship is the greatest wealth if it is true and correct. We must live it fully to the point of making her weak point in the words of holy Gregory.
The meal continued and just as the men were about to go their ways, Bertrand said to his friend:
Jodel, VA. Hit the road, your sins are forgiven. Do not rob any more. Come see me if you like and never forget what you have learned here.
My lord, I steal no more. Thank you for your forgiveness. I want to better understand the sacred writings with you.
-It's not me who forgives, it is the Most High. He forgives those who renounce vices to seek virtue. You want to study the scriptures. That is very honourable.  So go, take the road to St Liziers, and finally Toulouse  and the seminary where I studied. You must also work and share with everyone you meet and give something to the poor that you will meet. If you have nothing of material that you can give, give your best intentions, offer to work and speak calmly.

With these words, Jodel took the road. It is said that many brigands came to Comminges then, to meet the Bishop Bertrand and seek forgiveness. So much so that the city was known as the city of brigands. As for Jodel, he studied and became a connoisseur of writing, becoming a teacher in the seminary in Toulouse.

Chapter 5: End of the earthly life and patronage

The Bishop of Comminges led a pious life, devoted to helping others and friendship. As he got old, his strength failed more every day. He spent more and more time in his cathedral praying.  He could not sleep, so he spent his nights praying to the Almighty.
On a beautiful Sunday morning, the bell ringer entered the cathedral and found the bishop kneeling in the chancel, his heart had stopped beating, but his face was beaming, smiling and relaxed. There was no doubt: Bertrand, Bishop of Comminges had joined the Solar Paradise.

Later, Bertrand became the patron saint of the city where he was bishop. He also became one of the patron saints of Armagnac and Comminges County and the patron saint of Comminges. Finally, because of his study of the life of St. Gregory of Nazianzus, he is a minor saint of the Gregorian order which considered the first Gregorian history.
